“Tell me when to stop or I won’t, lass.”
Gia had been working at the store for ten years.
Started as a stock girl and now she was a buyer. Of course, the latest shipment of the very expensive lingerie she had bought came in and there was no one to put it on the mannequins. It did not bother her to do it herself. She would schedule it into her work day so there would be maximum exposure to the brand and, thus, a great profit for the company.
When she took the set out, Gia had to gasp.
She loved well-made lingerie and this brand was amazing. So delicate, yet could support someone with curves like hers. She held it up to herself in the mirror.
“This is what you do after hours, Gia?”
Gia dropped the delicate bra and stepped on it with her high heel in her haste to get away from Heck. His Scottish brogue turned her on and off at the same time. She had worked with him almost her entire time at the department store and he had always been like that.
Stern and condescending.
“I am doing my job,” she said, regaining her composure and picking up the bra she had snagged on the floor.
“I guess you can mark that up as defective,” he smirked.
“Well, as soon as I am done dressing this mannequin, I am leaving.”
And she had intended to leave when she saw Heck again standing at the exit.
“Well, are you going to let me pass?” she said.
“We are locked in.”
“Look, I am in no mood for your sudden sense of humor,” she said, pushed against his chest and damn it, the door would not budge!
After all of the recent robberies in the city, the new security measures meant alarms would go off if they tried to break out of the store. There would be a big ruckus.
“There must be a guard on site,” Gia pouted.
“AI ones possibly, but not a human one.”
Gia looked up at him, exhausting all of her ideas to get them out of the store.
“Are you hungry?” he asked. “Looks like it is going to be a long night.”
Gia was hungry and nodded as she followed Heck toward the dining hall of the store. Heck used to work in that area, so his swipe card still provided them access to it.
She smirked, watching him move around with ease.
“What do you want to eat?” he asked.
“Whatever is easiest, I feel weird eating here like this.”
“Well, we are stuck here, so we might as well make the best of it.”
Within moments, there was a small table with fancy sandwiches and pastries. Even a bottle of wine and the fancy store brand water she splurged in loving its carbonation and flavors.
“You know, I am not surprised that you got yourself locked up in here. You work too hard.” Heck said, scraping up fois gras with a piece of bread.
Gia almost choked on her lavender and elderflower bottled mineral water.
“Um, you are here with me, Mr. All Work And No Play.”
“I know that is what everyone calls me Gia. It is something I am proud of — I care about my job.”
“I care about mine, too.”
“I know you do. I have seen you work hard to get to where you are. You have never taken a breath.”
“You either.”
“No.” Heck said, looking down.
It was weird to be sitting with him enjoying a meal and small pleasantries. Heck usually stayed to himself and was pretty abrupt when he needed something. But he also was known as a hardworker and never missed a deadline with her at least. It was not surprising that they were the last two in the store at this time of the night.
Working to the last hour.
“It’s funny,” he almost said to himself. “I am finally supposed to go to Scotland and I missed my flight. Now I am here for the night.”
“Heck, I’m sorry.”
He grinned. Gia had to admit he was pretty striking when he smiled.
“It’s okay, my family will not be surprised.”
“When were you last in Scotland?”
“When I started this job.”
“Don’t feel bad,” Gia touched his hand and realized she had never touched him before. “My family lives in the city and I never see them.”
“It’s never intentional, is it? We just get so caught up at work.”
“Yes, there is not time for anything else.”
“No,” he said.
The way he looked at her right then and the way she felt startled Gia. She could not say that she did not notice that Heck was attractive before then, but he was looking at her like he thought she was —
attractive.
She was stunned by how such a small thing affected her. But she had not felt seen for a long time and especially not seen by a man. To be fair, she saw him too. They had been watching each other since their humble beginnings to where they were now.
“Maybe, Gia, there is a reason why I stay here. Maybe there is something that keeps me here.”
“Something?”
“Someone.”
Pretty sure she had food in her teeth, she licked her teeth but that did not prevent Heck from leaning across the table and kissing her. She trembled with his heat. He stood up and took her hand, lifted her and held her until she stopped shivering.
Kissed her temple.
“Cold?” he asked her.
“No,” Gia said, standing on her toes to kiss him. “Someone kept me here too.”
Their kisses spread like wildfire. Gia needed more the more he kissed her. His accent was thick when he said to her,
“Tell me when to stop or I won’t, lass.”
“Then don’t,” she moaned into his mouth. “Don’t stop.”
“I want to see you in the lingerie.”
“That I destroyed with my heel?” she smiled.
“I was teasing you, I want to see you in it…” she took his hand and they walked back to lingerie section.
But as soon as Gia was naked, Heck mounted her.
“Was this just a ruse to get me naked?” she smiled, kissing him and spreading her legs, hungry for him to penetrate her core.
“No, I wanted to see you in the lingerie, but you are too beautiful, just like this.”
Gia moaned as he stripped. His body was as beautiful as he said hers was. He knelt between her legs and kissed her.
It suddenly got bright.
“Okay, you two, party over — ”
Gia jumped up. There was a human security guard. The security guard was the daytime guard she always talked to. Who saw her once looking at Heck and joked with her,
“You are going to marry him one day, lass.”
The guard was Scottish too. He covered his eyes and winked at her.
Gia was astounded that even with the shock of the human guard, catching them did not stop what was happening between them. Months later in Scotland with Heck, she would see that his family was just as formidable.
As she and Heck learned how to balance work with life.
And love.
